The bathroom is quite possibly the most humid room in your house, so it’s common for your towels to start to smell.
Watch: How to fold towels
Worse, a musty smell is a good indicator of mould growing in your towels.
Why do people only use white towels?
Although, there’s a way to avoid this: only buy white towels!
While buying white might seem like a terrible idea because you can see the dirt and stains, that is precisely why white towels are best.
Here’s why white towels should be a staple in everyone’s bathroom.
White towels are easier to clean
Cleaning white towels is easier than cleaning coloured towels because you can run them on a hot cycle to kill germs and bacteria without worrying about the colour fading.
In fact, research says the ideal temperature for killing fungi in your washing machine is between 60-90 degrees over a more extended period. This means you might have to skip the quick wash when washing towels. The research also says it doesn’t matter if you use detergent.
If running a hot cycle every time isn’t practical, consider the occasional hot cycle to kill bacteria.
You can add bleach to white towels but be careful which type. Chlorine bleach can turn protein stains yellow if not used correctly.
Coloured towels will mask dirt and stains
Coloured or patterned towels might match your decor, but they are also great at hiding dirt and stains from plain sight. This means you might not realise when your towels need cleaning.
If you hate buying white towels, opt for ones with lighter colours. Lighter-coloured towels have less dye and tend to stay soft and absorbent for longer. They should also fade less than a darker-coloured towel.
How to look after your towels
- To keep your towels fluffy and absorbent for longer, always read the care label before washing your towels.
- It’s not recommended to use silicon-based fabric softeners on towels. After a while, it can clog the fibres making your towels crunchy and smelly.
- Instead of a fabric softener, add ½ a cup of white vinegar to the pre-wash cycle on your washing machine before washing with laundry detergent.
