7 places every first-time visitor to Singapore should see

See the island city in all its glory.

An island state off to the side of Malaysia, Singapore is a cosmopolitan city with a multicultural population and a tropical climate. Although Singapore is geographically small, the southeast Asian city is a melting pot of delicious food, shopping, amazing green spaces and impressive architectural achievements. Known for its massive airport that acts as one of the busiest transit hubs in the world, Singapore has so much more to offer than can be done in just a 48-hour stopover.

Here are some of the best things to see in Singapore, and you can learn more about the details and technicalities of travelling to Singapore by visiting their tourism website.

1. Singapore Zoo

Singapore Zoo is known as one of the best in the world, and is set in a rainforest environment with an ‘open-concept’ layout which means fencing is minimal and animals are separated by natural land structures or water. Some of the best attractions at this zoo, aside from 28 hectares of gorgeous rainforest and animals, is the Jungle Breakfast and Night Safari.

2. Chinatown

The heart of Chinatown is a bustling, colourful mix of old and new, with annual festive celebrations, night markets, spas and authentic hawker markets. For a journey into the past, pay a visit to the Chinatown Heritage Centre and Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum, or round the evening off with drinks at one of the many bars. Do a walking tour to see as much as possible by foot.

3. Gardens by the Bay

Set in the heart of the city, the impressive 101 hectares of Gardens by the Bay showcases horticulture and garden artistry, capturing the essence of Singapore as the premier tropical ‘City in a Garden’. This awe-inspiring space includes the avatar-like 16-storey Supertree Grove where you can marvel at the solar-powered trees against the Singapore Skyline by day, or witness the free Garden Rhapsody Sound & Light show by night. Travellers should also visit the two enclosed domes – the Cloud Forest with the world’s highest enclosed waterfall; and Flower Dome, the world’s largest free-standing glass greenhouse.
