Mum’s genius hack for drying clothes inside

"This is exactly what I want at my house!"

You have to do laundry, but if it’s raining, cold or the weather conditions just aren’t right, drying clothes inside can take forever.

While a dryer is one of the most obvious options, not everyone wants or needs one – and there are other options. In fact, one mum came up with an ingenious solution for this when she renovated her laundry.

How to dry your clothes inside when it’s raining or cold

In popular Facebook group Bunnings Mums Australia, Emily Broomfield shares her hack: “Best thing I did while renovating my laundry was to install a washing line, right next to the ducted heating vent.

“This is a mini Hills fold down from Bunnings. It holds 1-2 loads of washing. Game changer in winter,” she says.

Her post has been liked over 3000 times with many saying they are going to do the same.

“This is exactly what I want at my house! Where did you buy these?” said one mum.

“I’ve always said if I ever built a house I’d have a massive laundry with space to dry several loads of washing so my house doesn’t end up looking like all I do is wash clothes.  I hate hanging stuff outside, even in the middle of summer,” another commenter added.

Others shared that they have done the same thing in their laundry and swear by it for drying their clothes.

“Everyone thought I was crazy for adding a heating vent in the laundry. Best idea ever!”

“My dear handyman dad made me something similar – all materials from Bunnings. It folds up onto the bulkhead wall inside the laundry so you can’t see it from the kitchen. Edit – next to the boiler in the laundry so things dry in no time at all.”

While the heating duct definitely helps to dry your clothes faster, lots of mums say they’ve installed the clothes hanger in their laundry without heating and have no issues with drying times.

“I have one of these and swear by it! Don’t have a dryer or ducted aircon vent. Laundry does get a little Arvo sun and everything dries perfectly! Family of 4 too”

“It’s out of the way I don’t have to think about the weather and things dry so easily up there ”

More tips for drying clothes in wet weather

  • Run an extra spin cycle: once the washing cycle has finished, run an extra spin cycle to get rid of excess water. This will help dry your clothes in half the time
  • Set up a clothesline in the garage: if you don’t have room in the laundry for a clothes line, then what about the garage.
  • Airflow: whatever space you decide to hang your clothes out of the weather, the key is to have good airflow. Don’t hang your clothes too close together. If you have a fan that can be directed at your washing, that will help too.
  • Invest in a dehumidifier: a dehumidifier pulls moisture out of the air which can help your clothes dry faster, reduce humidity and lessen the chance of mould growing. Here is a list of the best dehumidifiers to use on muggy, rainy days.
