When it comes to cleaning your home, the blinds are often put in the too hard basket. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
A mum has shared how she cleaned her vertical blinds in 30 minutes – and the results are incredible.
Posting in the Facebook group, Mums Who Clean, Lusi Austin from That Homeschool Life shared terrific before and after pictures of her now sparkling clean blinds.
“For the past 10 years, I’d tried everything from vinegar to Koh, to a mixture of cornflour and warm water, to gumption, and NOTHING worked,” says Lusi.
How to clean vertical blinds
After reading through posts in the Facebook group, Lusi says she decided the best way to clean her blinds was with a combo of warm water, vinegar, dishwashing liquid and FAB laundry powder.
“Today, I ran the bath with warm water and added vinegar and dishwashing liquid. Once they were all immersed, I added 3 scoops of FAB laundry powder and left them soaking for half an hour. Rinsed off in clean water and then dried each one with a towel,” she explained.
The results are incredible.
“Guys, there are almost ZERO marks on these! I can’t believe it! I have loathed these for so long because I just couldn’t get them clean. They look so lovely!” says Lusi.
Other group members thanked Lusi for sharing and said they were keen to try this cleaning method on their blinds.
“I tried this the other day after you posted it on another thread. Life changing!!” said one person.
Another added: “Omg, I need to do this like. I feel like the old tenant never actually cleaned it.”
Others wanted to know how much vinegar and dishwashing liquid Lusi used.
Lusi replied: “I eyeballed it, but I reckon about a cup of vinegar and maybe 3 squirts of the dishwashing liquid.”

How to clean vertical blinds without taking them down
If taking your blinds down seems like too much effort, you can try and clean them while they are hanging up.
The key to cleaning your blinds without taking them down is to clean them consistently. Dust your blinds regulary from top to bottom and wipe down with a damp cloth dipped in a mixture of water and dishwashing detergent so dirt and grime doesn’t have the chance to build up.
Can you put vertical blinds in the washing machine?
Washing your vertical blinds in the washing machine will depend on the material they are made out of. If your blinds are fabric, it should be fine to wash them on a delicate cycle, but always read the care instructions first. If your vertical blinds are made out of plastic or vinyl, then you’ll have to stick to hand washing them.
