What is eclectic style?

At its core, eclecticism is all about creating a space that is truly one of a kind. The very definition of the term, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is “deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.”

As such, eclectic interiors combine elements from various time periods, cultures, and trends. It brings old and new styles together in a way that feels fresh and exciting, mixing interesting patterns with vintage furniture and modern accents to create an expressive space. There are no strict rules here — anything goes, as long as it feels right for you.

3 steps to nail eclectic design

1. Start with the base colour

As eclectic style draws on a variety of colours, it can help to start with a neutral palette. And ‘neutral’ doesn’t need to mean white or beige. In this vintage-inspired bathroom (pictured below), pale pink acts as the base colour for the rest of the styling elements.

If you’re struggling to create a sense of cohesion in any room, keep it neutral across floors and window furnishings for a fail-safe look. Carpet Court’s Latitude carpet range and Bali semi-sheer curtains are both available in a variety of elegant and neutral shades, ranging from soft pastels to indigos and strong greys.

2. Play with patterns and textures

Once you’ve chosen a colour palette to anchor your design, you can begin to layer different patterns in the room, from geometric shapes to florals or stripes. Don’t be afraid to combine textures like plush velvet, lived-in leather, and natural materials like rattan or jute for added depth and dimension.

3. Add meaningful pieces

Start by incorporating items that hold personal significance, like a vintage mirror from your grandmother, artwork picked up on a holiday, or a quirky thrift-store find that caught your eye.

Layer these with pieces that reflect your personality, such as framed family photos, handmade ceramics, or a stack of your favourite books on display. The trick is to blend these treasures seamlessly with your existing decor, letting them stand out without overpowering the room. By curating a mix of sentimental and standout items, you’ll create a space that feels both authentic and eclectic.

The benefits of eclectic interiors

What makes eclectic style so appealing is its flexibility. You don’t have to stick to one particular look, and you can change things up as you go. It’s about blending pieces that have meaning to you, whether they’re from your travels, passed down from family, or just things that make you happy. With eclectic decor, every item adds to the story of your home, making it feel warm, inviting, and completely unique.
