For many of us, keeping our clothes tidy is an ongoing battle. But it doesn’t have to be that way, so overhaul your wardrobe with specialised storage ideas that are specifically designed to optimise your available space. From sliding doors to shoe shelves, soft wardrobe inserts and wire storage, there is a solution for every crisis – even if your collection of footwear would make Imelda Marcos jealous! Here’s exactly how to build your own DIY wardrobe.
Shelving

Built-ins
The great DIY version of built-in robes is the flat pack. By using flat pack cabinets and accessories and doing it yourself, you can have the look of a $5000 built-in for about $2000. Just add your labour! These cabinets are readily available – all you need do is put them together. If depth is a concern, note that a wardrobe needs to be at least 580mm deep for clothes to hang properly. To make it look built-in, clad around the side and top with wall panels and matching cornice.
Doors
Have you had enough of the big mirrors on your wardrobe doors? When they aren’t doing you any favours first thing in the morning, cover them up with the look of gorgeous French panelling. Très chic! Shoe Shelves

Inserts
Give a basic wardrobe a makeover by kitting it out with pegboard so you can hang small shelves and other organisers, such as letter-holders, from hooks. Pretty pots are great for pens and pencils, while clear acrylic containers are excellent for sorting and showing off your smaller supplies such as pegs, ribbons, washi tape and the like. And if you can fit a mini filing cabinet, do it!
