Better Homes and Gardens, in partnership with Tuscan Path, is delighted to announce the winning entrants for Garden of the Year…
Our winner is Brenton Roberts, a passionate amateur who bought this cottage 11 years ago on 2ha of bush in the hills just outside Adelaide.
He drew up a plan for the garden, then started clearing the land to reduce the risk of bushfire and levelled the sloping site into terraces.
Over the past 7-8 years, his original plan has materialised into an award-winning garden that flatters and softens the old stone cottage and stone terraces, with a grapevine draping the verandah, espaliered Manchurian pear trees sweeping the lower walls and a dainty little hedge of edible fig. Bravo!
Let’s take a look at all of the amazing scenes that Brenton’s garden has to offer:
Garden of the Year for 2023
The before and after of the garden. It took Brenton 7-8 years for the garden to be completely finished.
Brenton Roberts and his wife, Libby, who helps out by clearing unwanted vegetation in the bush that surrounds the property.
Topiary always adds structure to a garden. In this case, germanders (Teucrium fruticans) are groomed into giant balls.
A long gravel driveway becomes a tree-lined avenue of Manchurian pears, prized for their spring blossoms and blazing autumn foliage. Underneath, sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ plays copycat in autumn with its red flowers.
Ever the recycler, Brenton collected the sticks for the vegie garden fence from the stringybark woodland on the property.
The lush, green and manicured garden blends in beautifully with the bush.
An old gate discovered on the property has found a new home where it’s put to great use.
The spiral topiaried Mexican cedars (Cupressus lusitanica) are like house guards.
The little edible fig tree hedge is pruned every couple of months to keep it in shape.
