How to sift icing sugar without a sieve

The kitchen hack all bakers need to know.

There’s nothing worse than your arms getting sore as you sieve away bags and bags of icing sugar for frosting, macarons or a celebration cake. Instead of sieving the old-fashioned way where plenty of elbow grease is required, why not turn to a nifty appliance for some help? The humble food processor sitting on your kitchen benchtop can be of great assistance beyond blitzing vegetables and mincing meat.

We asked our Food Editor, Sarah Murphy, for some expert advice and tips for using a food processor to sieve icing sugar.

“If you’re an avid baker, you know that icing sugar often clumps and can be time consuming to sieve (especially when you need a lot). Next time you need a large volume of icing sugar sifted in next to no time, simply add it to a food processor and process for approx. 30 seconds. You’ll have perfectly smooth, lump-free icing sugar ready to add to your favourite baking, no sifting needed!”
