Toilet paper is an absolute necessity, there’s no denying it. However, the type of toilet paper we choose to hang in the bathroom can make a big impact on the environment, both negative and positive. Unfortunately, many people don’t think about the environmental implications of toilet paper and as such, usually choose whatever is on sale at the supermarket when doing the groceries that week. Luckily, we spoke to Christina Kjaergaard, Commercial Manager Pure Planet Club to get the inside scoop on all things toilet paper, and learn about why it’s important to choose an eco-friendly toilet paper for your home.
5 ways toilet paper harms the environment
1. “It takes approximately 140 litres of water to make one roll of standard toilet paper,” says Christina.
2. “15% of the world’s deforestation is from the creation of normal toilet paper. In fact, Global toilet paper production wipes out approximately 27,000 trees per day, which is equivalent to around 9 million trees per year.”
3. “The deforestation done to the produce normal toilet paper is creating a rise in temperatures. Trees combat global warming by lowering the air temperature from evaporating water in their leaves.”
4. “The carbon emissions created from the commercial manufacturing of toilet paper wastes 17.3 terawatts of electricity per year.”
5. “It’s not all about the toilet paper! Don’t forget the packaging. Sadly, most toilet paper brands are wrapping their product in unnecessary plastic packaging, which is why Pure Planet Club went plastic-free,” says Christina. “Toilet paper is something we can’t avoid using, but we can make the conscious choice to use plastic-free options and therefore minimise damage to our environment.”
Why is an eco-friendly alternative necessary?
Christina explains that it isn’t simply the toilet paper itself that is bad for the environment, but the packaging it comes in. “An eco-alternative toilet paper is essential to saving our oceans!” says Christina. “Most toilet paper brands are wrapping their product in unnecessary plastic packaging, and plastic pollution is causing irreversible damage to our planet at an alarming rate. The majority of plastic manufactured globally is used only once, and then sadly thrown away, and can take thousands of years to break down.
According to Christina, deforestation is a massive environmental issue and contributes the effects of global warming. However, bamboo uses less water, generates more oxygen am dos the fastest growing plant on the planet, making it a sustainable ad eco-friendly material to make toilet paper from, which is why Pure Planet Club make their loo-roll from 100% bamboo and sugarcane recycled waste material from the manufacturing industry.
“Sugarcane is also an eco-friendly, renewable source with rapid reproduction speeds of less than one year in comparison to the decades it takes for trees to grow,” says Christina. “If we all choose eco-friendly toilet paper, we can work together to combat global warming by lowering the air temperature from evaporating water in there leaves. It takes one acre of trees to provide enough oxygen for 18 people per year!”
