What are the six types of treadmills?
Treadmills are often categorised as either commercial or regular — commercial treadmills are made to withstand extended use by multiple users each day while regular ones are great for homes. Both commercial and regular treadmills can fall into one of six sub-categories. Here's a general breakdown of each:
- Manual treadmills: Because this type doesn't use electricity to operate, they're considered the most basic and cheapest type of treadmill on the market. Aside from affordability, they're usually compact in size, lightweight and eco-friendly.
- Morotised treadmills: This type comes with all the bells and whistles, like varying speeds, incline and decline features, LCD screens, speakers, and Bluetooth and wifi connectivity.
- Hybrid treadmills: These are a combination of a traditional treadmill and an elliptical machine, which allows the user to seamlessly transition from a stepper to a treadmill.
- Rehabilitation/medical treadmills: These variants are designed with unique features like extra large size, easy grip handles and an ultra-durable construction that allow medical practitioners to monitor the physical condition of their patients while they use them.
- Folding treadmills: These are designed to easily collapse or fold into a compact package, perfect for those who are limited on space.
- Desk treadmills: These are built with a strong tray that can hold your laptop and keep it stable, so you can work while keeping up with your fitness goals.
What type of treadmill is best for home use?
"Treadmills are great as they are perfect for individuals at all fitness levels, you can simply begin by walking at a steady pace and lead to running on an incline," Appliances Online Fitness Category Manager Russell Crosdale explains.
But not all treadmills are built the same and it's important you ask yourself the following: Why are you purchasing this? Is it for injury or rehabilitation, training or just general fitness?
Ultimately, your reason will determine the type of treadmill you should invest in.
Injury or rehabilitation: "Look for cushioned running pads and strong and sturdy walking handles to aid in mobility and provide confidence when using the machine," Crosdale says. "Using the machine on an incline or decline for injury rehabilitation will allow targeted training for specific muscle groups."
Training for sports or an event: "Long-distance runners would benefit from a longer and wider belt and do not necessarily require the incline or decline function," Crosdale notes. "Professional walkers or runners would even benefit from extra cushioning inside the belt."
General fitness: "Depending on your fitness level, a walking treadmill is a great addition to any household as it can work for every family member," Crosdale says. "These are low-impact machines with a max speed of 6km/h."
How do I choose a home treadmill?
Now you have your 'why' figured out, determine your 'when' and 'why'. This will determine what features in a model will suit your fitness goals the best.
Incline and decline: "This is the ability for the machine to rise and give you the impression of walking or running up or down a hill. It's great for training calves, thighs and glutes."
Wifi: "Some machines have WiFi compatibility, meaning you can connect your smartphone to your machine. You can then follow along a workout on your phone or stream your favourite music or TV shows. Having this compatibility is great to keep you engaged during your workout."
Heart rate monitor: "Having a heart rate monitor built into your treadmill is especially useful if you are using the machine for rehabilitation or weight loss. The heart rate monitor gives you real-time updates on your heart's health and alerts you to safe zones, while also highlighting intensity levels during training."
Bluetooth: "Having Bluetooth connectivity allows you to stay connected throughout your workout. This is an important feature if you are squeezing in your workout during a break at work or on call. These machines usually have a charging port as well, making it easy for you to charge your phone and stream music."
