Air fryers aren’t essential for every kitchen but they can be incredibly convenient and valuable if you regularly cook chips, chicken, other meat or typically crispy food. As well as potentially reducing the amount of oils and fats you cook with, they can save time and lower energy costs.
The different sizes available also mean you can choose a model to suit your kitchen space – or even a motor home. Sleek designs also leave it up to you whether you want to keep your air fryer on your kitchen benchtop or store it after every use.
“Air fryers are convenient because they work as a benchtop appliance, so when you are finished with them, they can be easily stored away in the cupboard for next time. There is no need to have special cabinetry made to incorporate your air fryer into the kitchen,” The Good Guys category expert Tania Grillinzoni told the Better Homes and Gardens team.

What is the best air fryer in Australia?
There isn’t just one air fryer that’s best for everyone but thinking about what you want from an air fryer can help you get the right one for your home. That includes considering what you want to cook with it, the different sizes available and how much guidance or inspiration you want (i.e. would you use a free recipe app?).
Size and capacity
Air fryers are compact and work as mini turbo-charged convection ovens. The first step is to find the right size and capacity for your cooking needs.
“Air fryers consist of a basket to place the food in. The bigger the basket, the more you can cook at once. With smaller air fryers, you would easily be able to roast a cut of meat. Whereas a larger air fryer allows for more space to add vegetables into the basket to cook at the same time,” explains Grillinzoni.
- 0.5L – 2L is suited to a single person household
- 2L – 4L is suited to couples or small families
- 4L – 6L is ideal for families of 3-5 people
Keep in mind that the actual cooking space might be different to the listed capacity for an air fryer. This is because some manufacturer’s measure the total space inside the air fryer and whatever you put in it needs space around it to cook properly. For example, if you wanted to roast a whole chicken you’d typically need to look at air fryers with a capacity of more than 4L (think closer to 4.5L and upwards). It also depends on the shape of the air fryer and the size of the chicken.
How to clean an air fryer
If you’re not a fan of the cleaning up after making a feast, the good news is that air fryers are known for their ease of cleaning up.
“Unlike deep fryers or convectional ovens, after use you can simply allow to cool, remove the basket and wipe down with a sponge, or hand wash if you choose to, and you’re ready to start cooking again.”

What can’t be cooked in air fryer?

Where should air fryers not be placed?
Generally speaking, it’s not a good idea to place your air fryer on any wooden surfaces, in unventilated areas or in close proximity to water sources.
