Aldi is one of those shops that has a cult following. Their cheap and cheerful wines and spirits are known for winning awards on the international stage, their crazy special sale days accrue hectic lines of people, and their ingenious advent calendar ideas are endless.
So, what’s next? Winning gold at the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge, that’s what.
Aldi’s $6.99 bottle of One Road South Australia and Heathcote Shiraz (2017) has just been awarded a trophy for Best Medium Bodied Dry Red Wine at the Sydney International Wine Competition, and for the second year in a row, the wine has also won gold at the Great Australian Wine Challenge – beating other bottles of wine with a retail price of $150 or more.
Two other wines from Aldi also picked up awards at the Sydney International Wine Competition. The 2017 Blackstone Paddock Limited Release Margaret River Chardonnay, $14.99, and 2016 Blackstone Paddock Barossa Valley Vintage Release Shiraz, $17.99 picked up Top 100 and Blue Gold medals respectively.
The Sydney International Wine Competition is unique in that it’s the only international wine show that judges all its finalists in combination with appropriate food. So, if you’re wondering what wine will pair is what food the best, look no further! ALDI has provided the following suggestions.
1. Pair the One Road South Australia & Heathcote Shiraz 2017 – Highland Park Scotch Fillet Steak with mash potato and rosemary butter.
2. Pair the Blackstone Paddock Barossa Shiraz 2016 – Highland Park Eye Fillet Steak with chimichurri sauce and fried onions.
3. Pair the Blackstone Paddock Limited Release Margaret River Chardonnay 2017 – Roast turkey with sage, pancetta and streaky bacon and seasonal greens.
